We’ve made it to the end of January, a time of year that can be a graveyard for so many well-intended New Year’s resolutions. However, if you’ve set goals, I hope you’ve found the resolve to get this far successfully.
The challenge of a shaping a loosely defined resolution into a realistic, measurable, and time-sensitive goal, then internalizing the goal into a habit has been the topic of countless books, blogs, podcasts, etc. One observation I can throw into the mix is, no matter how specific the goal, it is inexorably tied to other areas of one’s life and those areas must also be taken into consideration to achieve success. It’s akin to the team of mountain climbers tethered together; the effort of one climber to scale up the mountain must be in concert with the other climbers to which he’s hitched.
My practice revolves around folks who set financial goals. It is important that we quantify and monitor the progress of these goals, but attention must also be given to how these financial targets impact the other areas of one’s life (and the lives of those around them). Achieving financial health is tethered to physical, mental, relationship & spiritual health. Pushing forward with a financial goal must be done in harmony, just like the mountain climbers.
Here’s to a happy, healthy and mindful year.
Cheers! – Steve H
